If you are a Nunavummiut parent or caregiver of a child or children in Elementary school we want to hear from you! Complete this survey and enter your name for the chance to win either a $500 gift card or a $250 gift card to Northmart. www.qhrc.ca/parents-survey The Qaujigiartiit Health Research Centre (QHRC) in Iqaluit is conducting an ongoing monitoring and research project on identifying determinants of school completion, post-secondary education, and education success in Nunavut.
The Qaujigiartiit Health Research Centre is an independent, non-profit community research centre, located in Iqaluit and governed by Nunavummiut. Our centre focuses on answering the questions of our communities and working on solution-seeking projects - developing and piloting interventions with, for, and by community members. Qaujigiartiit operates from a strength-based model, which is based on Inuit ways of knowing and doing, and has done so since 2006.
We are working on a project to understand and address our unique education needs in Nunavut. We will explore student perspectives on their secondary and post-secondary education experience and elementary school staff on their perspectives of supports and barriers. This work builds on the first three year phase of this project which, in part, focused on perspectives from high school staff perspectives. It is our hope that this information can be used to inform education initiatives for Nunavummiut and ensure our education system is meeting the needs of our young students. This is a 2-year project funded by the Nunavut General Monitoring Program.
This project has been registered with the Nunavut Research Institute #01006-17. We will not share any information that will identify any one person. We do plan to share anonymous general findings from the project with all of the government and non-government agencies, community organizations, and DEAs that can benefit from learning about student perspectives on the education system in Nunavut and how students can be better supported. To better understand the experiences of our students in Nunavut, we have 5 components to this project: 1) Survey current grade 12 students about their supports and school experience. 2) Survey current Nunavummiut receiving FANS and ALTS 3) Conduct narrative interviews with recent youth who left school without graduating and their parents/caregivers. 4) Interview key informants like school staff who volunteer to talk about ways to support students to achieve success in school. 5) Learn more from parents about supporting and improving attendance among young schoolchildren. Participation is completely voluntary. If you are a Nunavummiut parent or caregiver of a child or children in Elementary school we want to hear from you! Complete this survey and enter your name for the chance to win either a $500 gift card or a $250 gift card to Northmart. www.qhrc.ca/parents-survey The survey results are anonymous, and no one will be able to identify you. Your name will not be connected to the answers in the survey and will only be collected for the purposes of entering the draw. No harm should come to you as a result of filling out the survey. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Qaujigiartiit Health Research Centre in Iqaluit at 867-223-2780 or email moriah.sallaffie@qhrc.ca
